“I’m sure you must be weary, dear, with soaring up so high / Will you rest upon my little bed? said the Spider to the Fly.” So penned Mary Howitt in her popular verse of 1828. The vogue for spider and fly-themed jewelry began at court in 1842, when Prince Albert presented his Queen with an affectionate thank-you gift on his birthday: a bracelet adorned with a spider chasing a fly.
Our charming gem-set brooch features a fetching spider dangling from her gold chain thread in hot pursuit of her next meal. Madame Spider is anatomically correct—with eight shapely diamond legs, diamond mid-section, plump ruby abdomen, sapphire head, and tiny glowing ruby eyes. Her handsome, albeit more diminutive gentleman caller, has four wings of mine-cut diamonds, and a ruby and seed pearl-set abdomen. His slender legs (he is clearly no match for her) are mounted on a gold bar pin.
